From SI Live.com, A knife in the name of Allah:
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A 37-year-old newlywed from New Brighton tried to slit her husband’s throat as he slept because he was not the devout Muslim she thought she’d married, and pressured her to eat pork, drink alcohol and wear short skirts, authorities allege.
In a rambling, four-page handwritten confession, Rabia Sarwar laid out the “mental and emotional cruelty” that led her to try to kill Sheikh (Eddie) Naseem, a teacher of mathematics at Susan Wagner High School, early Wednesday morning, a law enforcement source said.
“I tried my best to cut his throat,” Ms. Sarwar admitted, according to court papers. Naseem woke up during the attack and took the knife from her, authorities said.

Ms. Sarwar’s attorney, Joseph Licitra, said Naseem’s failings extended beyond his non-devout lifestyle. The night before the alleged attack, Licitra said, Naseem “literally threatened to have her parents mutilated.”
“He was a cruel person. He preyed on her,” Licitra said.
As the law enforcement source describes it, Ms. Sarwar, who is Pakistani, told investigators that Naseem, who is half-Pakistani, presented himself as a devout Muslim before the two wed, about five months ago.
But after the wedding, she discovered that before meeting her, he had dated only non-Muslims, and he counted Salman Rushdie — the subject of a fatwa issued by Ayatollah Khomeini — among his favorite authors.
Ms. Sarwar also told investigators that Naseem pressured her into practices that she deemed immoral.
“He made her do stuff that she didn’t like to do — eating pork, drinking alcohol, wearing short clothes. She did all of that to make him happy,” the source said.
At about 3 a.m. Wednesday, inside the couple’s 80 St. Mark’s Place apartment, Ms. Sarwar “snapped,” the source said, cutting his neck, right cheek and right hand.
The New York Post adds:
Although Sarwar has lived in the US for more than a decade, Naseem said “she had never been exposed to American culture.”
“She was getting adjusted. She was trying to live the way I live, but on the same token she tells her parents ‘I went out drinking with him,’ and her mother started making derogatory statements about me,” he said. “There was no gun pointed to her head to do these things.”
Sarwar’s lawyer, Joe Licitra, admitted his client had been hospitalized in the past for depression, but insisted she had been “emotionally abused.”
“He got her to drink alcohol, eat pork and change her clothes. She wanted to dress traditionally. I think he was a cruel person who preyed on her,” he said.
Sarwar – who appeared in court wearing a blue, velour tracksuit, but later put on a headscarf – was charged with attempted murder, assault, and criminal possession of a weapon. She was released after her family came up with $25,000 bail.
Naseem said he would immediately file for divorce but did not think she should be in jail.
“I think she’s a lunatic and she should be in a mental hospital,” he said. “I want the best for her in her life. I hope she gets herself corrected.”
$25K bail for attempted murder? Imagine if the roles were reversed and it was the Muslim who was almost slaughtered?
According to Sarwar’s statement, Naseem was working on getting her green card, but her parents had apparently started the citizenship process for her a few years before. She is not a U.S. citizen and could face deportation, depending on the outcome of the case.
Ayaan Hirsi Ali (former Muslim currently under a death fatwa or two) via NY Post:
So: Why is there such a recent spate of honor killings in America? What does it mean when a woman tries to exact the same vengeance that’s been wreaked upon her gender by men for centuries?
“This is not a reverse honor-killing — it’s martyrdom,” says Islamic apostate and activist Ayaan Hirsi Ali, herself the target of death threats. “It’s a ticket for heaven for her, to clear her books. The only exception that’s made for a wife or daughter to disobey her husband or father is if he forces her to do something that’s un-Islamic. This is a message to other Muslims: ‘This man is defying God. What am I supposed to do?’”
